Go naked: Strip off excess packaging this Valentine's Day

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day has become a staple holiday for everyone to express their devotion to their loved ones as if there weren’t 364 other days a year to do so.

With all the carefully chosen gifts, flowers and cards that make their way into the hands and hearts of the beloved around the world, bundles of plastic and non-recyclable wrapping materials make their way into landfill. A report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found that the production of plastic has grown exponentially over the past 50 years from 15 million tonnes in 1964 to over 300 million in 2014 and is expected to double in the next 20 years.

So this year, why not give something a little different to your special someone, do your bit for the planet and go naked. No, not literally, but by stripping back on excess packaging. Show your love for your partner, friend or crush while also showing some love for Mother Earth.

Naked in the bathroom

We all know you bare all to bathe, but did you know that almost the entire Lush 2018 Valentine’s range is packaging free? This means more room for high quality ingredients in your products and more room for goodies in your gift.

So what are you waiting for? Have a browse at these recommendations and present your loved one with a naked present this year!

Your very own love potion

Cast a spell on the one you’ve been eyeing up with Tisty Tosty. Utter the magic words as you place it into the bath and cast a love spell. With romantic rose and sultry jasmine absolutes, skin will be calm and clear and so will your love life.

Oodles of bubbles

How better to describe love other than two vivid red hearts sandwiched together with shea and murumuru butter? If you’ve got a Whole Lotta Love to give, then this bubbleroon filled with heady, sultry jasmine and mood-brightening bergamot will leave no doubts. Crumble under running water for softening lemongrass and ylang ylang bubbles that spread the message of love.

Shower them in love

If your love prefers to shower, Tender is the Night naked shower cream may be their idea of heaven. With softening murumuru butter, sensual jasmine and uplifting ylang ylang, they’ll be left wanting amour, amour, amour.

Forget me Knot Wrap

No gift would be complete without something to wrap it in! Instead of wrapping all of your romantic goodies in paper or bags, why not pick a reusable Knot Wrap? Made from either organic cotton or recycled plastic bottles, Knot Wraps make the perfect final flourish to your gift. If your Valentine could do with a reminder on how to be more romantic How to be a Good Valentine Knot Wrap will be able to help! Designed by ARTHOUSE Meath, a not-for-profit organisation that supports adults with severe epilepsy and learning disabilities, your beau will never forget how to woo you again with this comprehensive and humorous list of instructions.

A lotta, lotta love

If all of these ideas sound great but premade boxes are more your style, we have your back. Big love deserves a big gift and Lots of Love has got you covered. Brimming over with the good stuff, there is no better way to express your feelings than with this chocolate box of treats. When your special someone is done using the products, the box and ribbon can be reused and the packing chips inside can be put into the compost meaning no extra plastic in landfill!

Undress to de-stress

A gift recommendation about going naked wouldn't be complete without mentioning a spa treatment! Trade in the boxes of chocolate and candies for a The Comforter? treatment instead, where a hot chocolate scrub and rose body serum help that special person drift off to a world of sweets and pure imagination.

Strip off and take to the streets

Going naked isn’t just something you have to keep to your own home. Branch out from bathing and explore loads of other options to treat your Valentine this year.

Flowers

Instead of flowers which are grown using all kinds of nasty of pesticides, shipped from all over the world and typically come wrapped in lots of non-recyclable plastic, why don’t you gift a potted plant? It will last much longer than cut flowers and a handpicked pot or planter will make your special someone think of you every time they see it. Succulents or cacti are great options as they are sturdy and low-maintenance but can still be very pretty and decorative. For something a bit different, why not gift someone an air plant and a pretty wire “planter” to display it in?

Handmade Valentine's Day gifts

How about handmade? Nothing beats it. Recycle old jars by washing and sterilising them in very hot water and use them as reusable packaging for homemade treats. Why not make some chocolates or put together a pre-made cookie mix in a cute jar to bake together? For an alternative to edible treats, you could play around and make your own custom-made tea blend if they are a hot beverage fan, make your own soy candles or put together a mini sewing kit for those who are oh sew lovely.

So whether you’re looking to treat somebody special or treat yourself (because self-love is important after all), Valentine’s Day needn’t be a messy affair. Strip off, go naked and do your world a good deed with a zero waste gift this year.
