Blackcurrants add a delectable berry scent to products as well as a dark purple colour. The little fruit revives and soothes the skin, thanks to a high vitamin content.
The blackcurrant (ribes nigrum) is a medium-sized shrub, cultivated in Europe and Asia for its fruits that are eaten raw or transformed into juice, jam and alcohol. It is a red currant's parent and grow similarly: after flowering in April, a bunch of dark juicy fruits appear like grapes during the summer.
Blackcurrant juice is highly antioxidant with vitamin E and A, and 200mg of vitamin C per 100g of fruit (very high!). Antioxidants are compounds made by plants to prevent premature breakdowns of their cells caused by exposure to atmospheric agents like air, heat and sunlight. Applied topically, they are thought to protect skin as well, keeping it toned, supple and radiant.
